£40m Harbour Terminal Progresses

Work to construct a £40 million renewable energy terminal is set to begin in Belfast Lough.

According to the website www.unearthore.com the scheme proposed by offshore wind developers, DONG Energy, is due to start within months.

Final go ahead for the project is expected in June with work on the 50 acre site due for completion by the end of 2012.

The project will create up to 300 permanent jobs and 150 construction jobs.

The terminal is to be developed by the harbour authority itself and is crucial to the success of the new venture, allowing components to be shipped in and completed turbines to be delivered to offshore sites.

The construction tender is scheduled for award in July and the Planning Service has confirmed that development siteworks may proceed without an Environment Impact Assessment.
