Takeaway owner fined £2000 for rat infestation
The owner of a rat-infested takeaway on Belfast’s Shankill Road has been fined £2000 and given a two month suspended jail sentence for food and hygiene offences.
The 30-year-old proprietor, Fu Xue Xue, of the Emerald City Chinese was also ordered to pay £130 to the Belfast City Council.
The court heard a rat infestation that led to the charges had been eradicated. One of the rodents was seen during a council inspection.
Meanwhile, one of Northern Ireland’s biggest construction companies has been fined £10,000 when the second floor of Belfast’s new court building in Oxford Street collapsed injuring seven men. The firm, Karl Northern, admitted that there had been a “breakdown of communications” on the site. (CD)

Tesco Fined For Illegal Display Of Cigarettes
Supermarket chain Tesco has been fined after staff at one of its branches were caught displaying cigarettes to a person under the age of 18 years. The incident happened at its premises on the Belmont Road in April last year. The company was fined £500 and also ordered to pay £69 in costs to Belfast City Council, who brought the prosecution.

Street Drinkers Pay The Cost
Five people have been fined at Belfast Magistrates Court for drinking alcohol in public. Tyrone McCann, from Richmond Avenue in Newtownabbey, was fined £50 and ordered to pay costs of £66 after he was detected drinking alcohol at Suffolk Road in west Belfast on January 16.

Primark Donates £500,000 To Support Businesses Affected By Fire
Retailer Primark is donating £500,000 to Belfast City Council's City Recovery Investment Fund. The fund is being set up after a number of businesses have been severely affected by the fire at the Bank Buildings which happened over three weeks ago. A cordon remains in place and 14 firms have been closed for up to four months.

St Patrick's Day event has support of BCC says councillor
The Chairman of Belfast City Council’s Good Relations Steering Panel has challenged claims that the Council is not supporting St Patrick’s Day in Belfast. It follows a protest outside Belfast City Hall last week by the St Patrick's Carnival Committee who claim the Council isn't funding this year's event at the City Hall.
