Strangford Lough Information Network scoops top prize

The Strangford Lough Information Network website has picked up the top prize in this year’s Northern Ireland Web Awards.

Greg McConnell, the Deputy Secretary of the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment, presented the award to Caroline Nolan of Strangford Lough Information Network at a gala ceremony in the Hilton Hotel.

The website - found at www.strangfordlough.org - and which provides a wide array of information about the Lough and the surrounding area, was judged the best Northern Ireland site on the Internet.

Clifford Harris, Compaq’s General Manager for Northern Ireland and Chairman of the judging panel, said: “The Strangford Lough site epitomises what is best on the net. It has an impressive array of information on the area and makes use of a number of technologies to give people an exciting, multimedia experience. Because it gives a real flavour of the area, people who log on are genuinely encouraged to visit.”

As overall winner of the Northern Ireland Web Awards, Strangford Lough Information Network received equipment and services to the value of £12,000 from the three award sponsors. The company also won the Best Education Website category in the awards.

The Web Awards, now in their third year, actively promote the local development of high-quality websites. This year’s scheme attracted a record number of over 200 entries.

Four other local organisations won category prizes in this year’s awards: Construct and Build, for Drawing Viewer - a site for the construction and planning industry - which was judged the Most Technically Innovative website; Translink, the bus and rail company, whose site won a prize for Best Content and Information website; the community based website produced by the Greater East Belfast Partnership which won Best Voluntary/Community website; and Products of Northern Ireland Express who won Best e-Commerce Website.

Mr Harris added: “The evidence is plain that, with encouragement from Government through the Information Age Initiative, more and more organisations are discovering the opportunities presented to them by the Internet. This year we were impressed by the overall rise in quality of websites produced in Northern Ireland.”

Compaq, BT Northern Ireland and the Belfast Telegraph sponsored the 2001 Northern Ireland Web Awards. (SP)
