Belfast To Celebrate Titanic Centenary

Belfast City Council is set to mark the 100th anniversary of the launch of RMS Titanic, with four days of events including exhibitions, talks, tours, plays and family activities.

A series of exhibitions such as 'Life in Belfast' and the Shipyard Memory Wall, which focuses on the stories of the thousands of men who built Titanic, will be on show at City Hall.

The 'Titanic 100' photographic exhibition continues on the lawns outside, celebrating the building of Titanic from its inception to launch, through the photography of RJ Welch, the official photographer for Harland and Wolff. Rare artifacts associated with the Titanic, White Star Line and Harland and Wolff, will be on display courtesy of auctioneers Henry Aldridge and Son.

There will also be a special screening of 'Titanic: The Mission’' the acclaimed Channel 4 series which looked at the engineering achievement by recreating iconic sections of the famous vessel.

A series of walks and tours, both on land and water, take in key landmarks associated with the Titanic. These include bus and walking tours of Queen's Island and walking tours of Edwardian Belfast. There will be special tours of the Thompson Graving Dock and the adjacent Pump House and visitor centre.

Susan Millar - great-granddaughter of engineer Thomas Millar - who was one of the 22 Belfast men who lost their lives when the ship sank, leads a very personal tour of Titanic Belfast.

The Lagan Boat Company is back with their popular Titanic-themed boat tours. For those who wish to follow the Titanic story for themselves though, the award-winning Titanic Explorer Trail is available, free of charge, as part of the 'Go Explore NI' smartphone app, for both iPhone and android, while the Titanifacts iPhone app is also available for download.

Prior to the main festival, the City Hall will host a production of the acclaimed 'Blackness After Midnight.

Written by Denis MacNeice, the dramatisation focuses on the enquiry proceedings that asked if the Captain of the Californian ignored Titanic's distress rockets, or if the ship was really 20 miles away, surrounded by ice, as he claimed.

Saturday 23th - Tuesday 26th April.
