Minister welcomes Heathrow reinstatement

Regional Development Minister, Gregory Campbell, has welcomed the announcement by BMI British Midland to reinstate four daily return flights between Belfast International Airport and Heathrow.

The Minister said the move was an important step by BMI that recognised the importance to Northern Ireland of strong links with the UK’s main international hub airport. He added: “I welcome this development and I commend British Midland on their initiative in recognising the commercial potential of this route.

"As Minister for Regional Development I want to maximise both access and choice for those travelling by air to and from Northern Ireland and onwards to other international destinations.

"For this reason I will endeavour to press upon British Airways, the importance which Northern Ireland people attach to this strategic connection and specifically to their role as a major flag-carrier in servicing this route."

While BMI also confirmed the transfer of the majority of its business to Belfast City Airport with the start of its winter timetable on October 28, the airline announced its intention to operate additional services from Belfast International Airport.

This will mean that BMI British Midland will now operate seven daily flights from Belfast City Airport to London Heathrow and four daily flights from Belfast International Airport also to London Heathrow. (MB)
