Councillor calls on DoE to make road safety a priority
A local councillor has urged the Department of Environment to make safety on school buses across the province’s roads a priority following a school minibus accident in County Tyrone.
SDLP assembly member for Fermanagh/South Tyrone Tommy Gallagher made the call after more than 20 school children and four adults were taken to hospital following a collision between their school bus and a car on Tuesday morning.
An RUC spokesman said none of the children was seriously hurt in the crash, which took place shortly before 9am on Tuesday October 9 on the Point Road near Benburb.
All the children on the bus, together with the driver and the occupants of the car, were taken to Craigavon Hospital, some with minor injuries.
Mr Gallagher said the Department of Environment (DoE) must make safety on school buses a high priority following Tuesday’s accident. He said: “The children involved in this accident had a lucky escape, but this incident underlines the importance of prioritising the safety of our children. A recent DoE report stated that stringent measures must be taken in order to bring our school buses up to standard.
“However we must also make sure that the roads in which our children travel are equally safe. As we head for the winter months, school bus routes must be adequately salted, and their upkeep must be a priority.” (AMcE)
