Enterprise ministers launch all-Ireland energy plan
The Ministers for Enterprise north and south of the border have come together to launch a jointly-commissioned study on options for an all-island embracing energy market.
Northern Ireland Trade and Investment Minister Sir Reg Empey and the Irish Minister for Public Enterprise, Mary O’Rourke announced the publication of the report on Tuesday October 9, which was co-funded by the European Commission.
The two-volume Interim Report describes the two energy markets, identifies any barriers to trade and importantly sets out future options for an all-island energy market. The Final Report is a summary of the key issues, conclusions and recommendations.
Sir Reg Empey commented: “I welcome the consultants’ recommendations which have generated considerable interest and debate as their findings emerged.
“These proposals will be fully considered in conjunction with the Department of Public Enterprise over the next few months and, where appropriate, will be reflected in a new strategy on which my Department will be consulting in due course.”
Mary O’Rourke said: “The Reports have identified the major issues facing the creation of an all-island energy market and provide both administrations with a useful starting point for the development of more intensive co-operation to clear a path for an all Ireland energy market. Such a market can only spell good news for industry and consumers.” (AMcE)
