Northern Ireland on world map for technology advancement
The Minister for Employment and Learning, Dr Sean Farren, has attended the launch of Queen’s University’s new – world first - Sonic Arts Research Centre (SARC).
Addressing over 150 of Northern Ireland’s top academics and experts in the field of music technology on Tuesday October 9, Minister Farren said: “The Sonic Arts Research Centre is a tremendous achievement for Queen’s University and a welcome development which will bring together first-class researchers in the field of music technology.
“The Centre will play an important role in supporting the local economy, by providing the infrastructure for world class research and promoting technology transfer to local industry. I believe that the Centre will meet this challenge by successfully placing Northern Ireland firmly on the world map for technological enhancement in the field of music research and development.
“A quality research base is vital to Northern Ireland’s economic prospects and our two universities make a significant contribution to this economic regeneration. It was in recognition of this that I introduced, last year, the Support Programme for University Research (SPUR) under which the Sonic Arts Centre has been funded. SPUR has made, and will continue to make, a significant investment of up to £40 million in Northern Ireland universities’ Research and Development infrastructure over the next four years.
“This development reflects the commitment to research set out in the Northern Ireland Executive’s Programme for Government.
“This advancement is a clear signal of the capabilities and potential which exist in Queen’s. I have no doubt that it will assist the University by adding to its, and indeed Northern Ireland’s reputation for research of international standing.” (AMcE)
