Aerospace companies switch on to new e-business service

The Northern Ireland Aerospace Consortium (NIAC), which represents 18 local businesses, and the Industrial Development Board’s Business Excellence Division have jointly developed a new computerised system designed to enable companies to place bids for contracts more quickly.

The new system will allow companies either individually or in collaboration with other NIAC members to bid for new contracts in international markets faster than ever before.

NIAC’s new opportunity management system was announced by Graham Davis, Executive Director of the Business Excellence Division, at the launch of IDB’s extended E-Business Programme, which will continue to be delivered by VISION, the international business design and IT services company.

Mr Davis said: “The NIAC venture is an excellent example of IDB’s support for an industry facing serious difficulties, at present and also shows how the application of internet technology can significantly strengthen competitiveness.

“By embracing the latest e-business technology the industry will be better positioned to compete more effectively and cost-effectively for new contracts when the global aerospace industry returns to a position of strength.

“Our programme offers companies practical guidance on how to obtain maximum business value from a website through identifying new contracts faster and opportunities for greater cost efficiencies.”

The NIAC electronic database processes new contract information received from global aerospace companies by identifying local companies with the skills that match the contract requirements. Furthermore, it ensures prompt communication between NIAC members about new business opportunities.

In addition to matching contract requirements to company capabilities, the system incorporates a clear process for reaching decisions on bidding and on the identity of the member to lead the bid.

The IDB E-business team has also worked with individual aerospace companies such as Denroy Plastics in Bangor on the application of internet technology in processes which enable customers to place and track orders for components. (MB)
