UDA linked to trouble on Shankill Road

Police came under sustained petrol bomb attack from loyalists while searching a house in the Shankill area of west Belfast.

The operation on Thursday evening sparked serious rioting on the lower Shankill Road, a stronghold of the Ulster Defence Association.

One man was arrested after a pipe bomb was discovered during the search in Shankill Terrace, which began around 6.40pm on Thursday October 11.

A police spokesman said detectives found three blank-firing pistols in the search, a quantity of ammunition, a timer power unit, £900 worth of cannabis and paramilitary-style regalia.

A police spokesman said a blast bomb, 13 petrol bombs and a variety of fireworks were thrown at officers during the operation. There were also reports of cars being hijacked and set alight.

Two officers received ear injuries when a large firework exploded at the back of their Land Rover and one soldier was taken to hospital when he was hit in the face with a missile.

Security sources and Sinn Féin have both indicated that the UDA was behind the trouble.

There were also reports of trouble in North Belfast. A blast bomb was thrown at the home of a Catholic family in North Queen Street and there were reports of shots being fired at nearby Duncairn Gardens. (AMcE)
