Local school wins European Quality Award

Education Minister, Martin McGuinness has congratulated St Mary’s College in Londonderry, on becoming the first school in Europe to win the overall European Quality Award.

The award was presented to school principal, Dame Geraldine Keegan, at a ceremony in Lucerne, Switzerland, on Thursday evening.

Mr McGuinness said: “The European Quality Awards are the highest honour any European organisation can achieve, and it is a wonderful tribute to the dedication and hard work of Dame Geraldine and her staff and pupils that the school has become the first in Europe to achieve this honour.

“Having visited the school, and met Dame Geraldine on several occasions, I can testify to her personal commitment to improving performance and increasing competitiveness within the school. This award is the latest in an impressive series of achievements which has led to widespread national and international recognition for the school.”

The school’s previous awards include the Millennium Award for Excellence; the Charter Mark; the UK Business Excellence Award 2000 and the TNT Modernising Government Partnership Award. (MB)
