AVX announces Larne plant closure
Mobile phone chip manufacturer AVX has announced it is to close its Larne plant in County Antrim which employs 65 people.
The Japanese owned company made the announcement late on Thursday October 11 and said the closure would take place over the next six months.
The company claimed that where possible employees formerly based in Larne would be offered jobs in the firm's factory in Coleraine in County Londonderry.
The Coleraine plant produces miniature electronic components for mobile phones and computers.
The company said, however: "Regrettably there will be a number of job losses." AVX also said it would "consult fully with employees affected by these proposals and their representatives". The company said it regretted the uncertainty created by its decision, but felt the move was necessary to cut its costs and strengthen its business.
Martin McGuigan, AVX European Vice President said: "It is essential that our distribution performance fully supports the continuous improvements we are seeking in the service we provide to the customer."
The news follows a series of blows for the company. After having heralding 125 new jobs in Coleraine as a result of an IDB backed £54 million investment in September 2000, the company announced 100 jobs cuts in June this year. Thursday’s news means the Japanese company will be retain only the Coleraine base in the manufacture of multilayer ceramic capacitors used to store and distribute energy in electronics and telecoms products.
