Stableyard restoration for community recreation
Plans to restore the Barnett’s Stableyard complex at Barnett’s Demesne in Belfast have been announced at the launch of the redevelopment project, which took place in the buildings earmarked for restoration.
Earlier this year Belfast Activity Centre (BAC) and Northern Ireland Countryside Access and Activities Network (CAAN) were successful in their joint submission to Belfast City Council for a 25-year lease on the Barnett’s Stableyard complex.
A new company, Add Venture (NI), whose directors include BAC and CAAN Board members, has been established to oversee the restoration and future management of the complex.
The idea is to restore the buildings, to conserve part of Belfast’s building heritage and to provide accommodation for the new Northern Ireland Countryside Recreation Information Centre and cater for the provision of a wide range of outdoor recreational and educational activities.
Add Venture is actively engaged in a fund raising campaign to restore and refurbish the Stableyard complex, and funding applications are being sought from a wide range of statutory and charitable organisations.
At the launch, Ian Jeffers, Chairman of Add Venture, outlined the aims of the project and told guests that the restoration project was dependent on securing funding totalling £550,000.
He said: “I am delighted to announce that the funding campaign had been given a jump start thanks to several benefactors. Add Venture has very recently secured major funding from the Sports Council for Northern Ireland under the Sports Lottery Fund (£150,00) and from Ulster Garden Villages (£65,000).
“We are very grateful for this generous support and, although we still require further help to reach our target, this means that we can begin work on the redevelopment which when completed will bring many benefits to the local community.”
Guests had the opportunity to look around the buildings and inspect restoration plans, while children from some of the local schools were in the courtyard and surrounding parkland demonstrating the benefits of a range of outdoor and personal development activities including target archery, ski walks and a challenging climbing wall.
