£1.5 million boost for fast internet services
Minister for Enterprise Trade and Investment, Sir Reg Empey has announced a £1.5 million package of regional funding to boost the delivery of fast internet services through broadband technology to all parts of Northern Ireland.
The funding is part of a £30m package announced by e-Commerce Minister, Douglas Alexander during e-Business week.
Welcoming the package of funding Sir Reg said: “The timing of this funding is welcomed, with the recent approval by the Executive of the Telecommunication Strategy for Northern Ireland.
“Industry is beginning to recognise the benefits broadband can bring to the way they do business and how they interact with their customers and suppliers. This package of support will help us to stimulate action across the region.
“The availability of world-class telecommunications infrastructure and services is central to regional economic development, knowledge based wealth creation, innovation and social equality.
“My officials will be working closely with DTI, the other devolved administrations and Regional Development Agencies, as well as key local stakeholders, on finding ways of best utilising this funding.”
The Devolved Administrations and Regional Development Agencies are currently being requested to put forward innovative schemes, to use the funds to extend broadband networks and the use of broadband by business and consumers. (MB)
