Kennedy Announces £2 Million Boost For Employment Programme
Employment and Learning Minister Danny Kennedy has pledged £2 million towards an innovative employment programme designed to help those most disadvantaged in the job market.
The Local Employment Intermediary Service (LEMIS) has been operating in Belfast, Londonderry and Strabane for three years and in that time has helped almost 1,500 people find employment.
The Minister said: "In the current economic climate it is vital that we do all we possibly can to help people in traditionally hard to reach groups to find jobs and progress in the labour market. I therefore welcome the opportunity to be able to make funds available to not only continue the LEMIS service in its existing format, but to extend the service to three new areas - Newry and Mourne, Movie and Cookstown - the three next most deprived areas in Northern Ireland."
LEMIS provides tailored assistance to help unemployed people, many of whom may have been out of work for some considerable time and in need of personal help and support, to find and hold onto a job. The service is delivered by community-based organisations and is particularly helpful to those who, for whatever reason, are not presently using the statutory job-finding services. LEMIS therefore complements the existing Jobs & Benefits office and JobCentre facilities.
The Minister praised the success of LEMIS to date and added: "My Department is committed to helping people prepare for, and enter into, the labour market. Through LEMIS, we can specifically target those individuals in areas of most need, and work with them to help them find employment which makes a real difference to individuals' lives. We will continue to work with community-based organisations on a range of initiatives which are designed to have a positive effect on local communities."
From April, LEMIS will also subsume the Progress 2 Work initiative which helps people with specific problems - homelessness, ex-prisoners and those recovering from drug or alcohol addiction - with their employability needs.

Alliance Communities spokesperson Kellie Armstrong MLA has called for recommendations from the independent welfare mitigation measures to be published as soon as possible. It comes after the Strangford MLA wrote to Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey to seek an update on when the independent review of the mitigations would be published.

Police Appeal Following Burglary In Magherafelt
Police are appealing for information following an aggravated burglary at the home of a woman in Ballyronan, Magherafelt. Cash and jewellery were stolen in the incident on Tuesday. Sergeant Sam Young said: "At about 11am, two men in a small blue van called at the house, which is on the road between Ballyronan and Toome.
