Residents set for battle over helicopter noise
Residents in south Armagh look set to launch a legal bid in order to curb noise from British Army helicopters in the area.
The South Armagh Farmers’ and Residents’ Committee (SAFRC), who are expected to hand its petition over to councillors on Monday October 15, said its case had been strengthened by a European ruling aimed at grounding flights overnight between 6pm and 10pm at London’s Heathrow Airport.
Anti-noise campaigners who live near the London airport won the case in the European Court of Human Rights, which ruled that their rights were being violated by night flights to and from the airport.
As a result the south Armagh residents are to petition Newry and Mourne district council for financial backing to bring a similar case over military helicopters.
The group said: “Of late, we have received numerous complaints about day and night-time flying from residents throughout the south Armagh area. Particular concern is voiced over the amount of helicopters ferrying cargo from Bessbrook military barracks to the bases and joint British Army/RUC barracks in Crossmaglen and Forkhill. It is believed that building supplies are being brought into the bases as construction work and refurbishment is visible.”

Man Injured After Bomb Explodes
A man has been injured in Co Armagh after a bomb exploded. It is understood the man was attempting to remove a poster from a lamppost in the Corliss Road area of Crossmaglen a device exploded. He suffered injuries to his hands and body, but they are not believed to be life-threatening.

Man Charged Over Burglaries
A man, aged 31, has been charged with a number of burglaries and hijackings. The offences occurred in the south Armagh area on 20 December 2013. He was charged with attempted burglary, three counts of burglary, two counts of hijacking and criminal damage. He is due to appear before Newry Magistrates' Court on 9 July.

PSNI 'Consider Omagh Retrial'
The PSNI are examining the possibility of a retrial of a South Armagh man originally cleared of involvement in the Omagh bombing. South Armagh man Sean Hoey was cleared of murdering of 29 people in Omagh, at the end of his trial in December 2007, which failed to secure any convictions against those charged with the devastating attack.

More Arrests Over Quinn Killing
Three more men have been arrested in connection with the murder of south Armagh man Paul Quinn. The men from the Forkhill and Crossmaglen areas were arrested on Thursday morning. A number of items have also been removed for examination in what police said this afternoon is the second phase of a "targeted operation" in south Armagh.

SF MLA blames calf deformity on spy-post 'emissions'
Sinn Féin have blamed a British Army spy post in South Armagh for the birth of a calf with two heads. Local people said they were convinced the calf was born with the deformity because of emissions from British Army equipment in the South Armagh area.
