Father And Daughter Recovering After Kidney Donation Operation
A 73-year-old Eglinton man and his daughter are recovering at home after she donated a kidney to him.
Robert Smyth, who had renal illness for 40 years, was given one of Iilona Neilson's kidneys two weeks ago.
Both patients are doing well and Mrs Neilson she said the operation had brought them even closer together.
Mr Smyth commented: “My doctor said my kidney was working so well it's probably better than hers.”
He said he still had problems but he never felt "down" at any time.
"I have a lot of pain. One of the side effects is the trembling hands and I have to travel to Belfast twice a week to make sure the kidney is not rejected."
Mrs Neilson said the moment she had to say goodbye to her husband and she was wheeled into the operating theatre was when she realised what she was actually doing.
"Talk is cheap. It's OK to say I will do this and I will do that for someone but when you are lying on the bed and you look around and you do not know anybody it becomes very very real."
The first 24 hours after the operation were "horrendous" and nurses told her they kept her light on overnight so that they could keep an eye on her.
"It's like if you get hit by a double decker bus. That's the only way I could describe it."
Mr Smyth said he was still feeling pain, but his surgeons were happy with his recovery.
"Since then I have seen certain changes in my lifestyle, or feelings, that have improved. I'm sleeping much better than before."
Mr Smyth called Mrs Neilson his "precious, beautiful daughter."

Community Service For Bernadette Smyth
Bernadette Smyth, an anti-abortion protestor who was convicted of harassing a director at Belfast's Marie Stopes clinic, has been sentenced to 100 hours of community service. According to reports, the 52-year-old who is a leader of anti-abortion group Precious Life, must also pay £2,000 compensation to her victim.

GAA Kidney Transplant Fails
A kidney donated by a former Derry GAA player to a fellow coach has been removed as a result of medical complications which occurred during the transplant. Joe Brolly donated his kidney to Shane Finnegan as part of an operation at Guys Hospital in London on October 3. But the kidney had to be removed on 12 October.

Rev Martin Smyth to stand down as MP
Long serving Ulster Unionist party member, the Rev Martin Smyth has announced he is not to seek re-election and will stand down as MP for South Belfast at the next General Election. The Rev Smyth, who is 73, said he had come to the decision in order to spend more time with his wife Kathleen, who has been ill.
