Equality is a key priority for Executive

The core principles and values of equality are fundamental to the work of the Northern Ireland Executive, according to Enterprise Minister, Sir Reg Empey and Deputy First Minister, Séamus Mallon, as they officially opened the Equality Commission's new premises at Shaftesbury Square in Belfast.

Mr Mallon said: "In the devolved administration, we are trying to work to the highest possible standards - of equality and human rights. We are committed to promoting these through strong legislation, effective public policies and strategies and by recognising best practice.

“Our system of Government is designed to be accessible to - and inclusive of - all shades of opinion. We have been working, for the first time ever in our society, to establish a political system that enjoys the support of all the people it serves. Despite difficulties, the Good Friday Agreement has put down deep roots. Its key principles - equality, human rights, partnership - are the key principles not only of the Equality Commission but also of the new society that is slowly emerging.

Sir Reg added: "The core principle of equality is woven into the fabric of the Belfast Agreement, at the heart of which is a commitment to mutual respect, civil rights and religious liberties of everyone in the community.

"We have created a new Equality Unit in the Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister, bringing all equality issues together at the heart of government for the first time ever. The work of the Equality Commission is a priority and Government will ensure that it has adequate resources to enable it to carry out its work effectively.” (CD)
