Irish hoteliers urged to battle downturn
Dublin-based hospitality software company, Amateo, has called for Ireland’s hotel chains to take immediate steps to fight off any threats to their businesses as they battle with a downturn in business following the US terrorist attacks on September 11.
While many hotel chains are already offering discounted offers for customers, which is providing welcome relief for some, the company warned such moves would not produce sufficient revenue for survival in the long term.
Fears are already growing as to what the short and longer-term effects will be, with jobs and business profits already under threat.
According to Amateo’s chief executive, Matthew Maxwell, as the market shrinks, the competition between hotel chains and independent hotels will intensify in a market that is already seeing its total bed nights being reduced by more than 30 per cent across Northern Ireland and the Republic.
He said: “The current business for hotels in Ireland has already suffered due to the foot and mouth crisis, and the loss of the US market has been the final nail in the coffin to many hoteliers in what has been a dire year for the hospitality industry.
“Discounts on hotels in Ireland are being offered at up to 70 per cent. The result is that they are getting bodies in the door, but they are barely warm.” (MB)
