Minister launches consultation on renewable energy

Sir Reg Empey, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment, has announced the publication of a renewable energy consultation document for Northern Ireland. Entitled "Renewable Energy in Northern Ireland - Realising the Potential." the consultation document refers to the European Union policy and to the UK Government’s target of producing 10 per cent of its electricity from renewable energy sources by 2010 and explores Northern Ireland’s contribution towards this target.

Highlighting the potential for sustainable energy, the Minister said he was confident that, with an appropriate market which offered suitable trading arrangements and continued technological advancement, sources of renewable energy could be brought firmly into the mainstream of electricity supply in Northern Ireland.

The results of the consultation will be reflected in a new energy strategy to be published next year.

The Department will be consulting separately and more widely on the new energy strategy, including the role which renewable energy sources might play in the energy market in the future. (MB)
