Nesbitt reaffirms executive’s commitment to equality
Dermot Nesbitt, Minister in the Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister, has reaffirmed the devolved administration’s commitment to promoting equality of opportunity, as outlined in the Programme for Government.
Speaking at the first annual Equality Conference, which was held in Belfast’s Hilton Hotel, Mr Nesbitt reiterated the Executive’s commitment to change policies and programmes to help build a more equal society, focusing efforts and resources to address inequalities.
He said: "A significant body of law already exists in Northern Ireland which outlaws discrimination on the grounds of sex, race, disability, and religious belief or political opinion. We will be bringing forward proposals to update this law, taking account of developments in the EU, and Great Britain.
"The challenge for this administration is to ensure that respect for equality and human rights becomes second nature in all that we do - an integral part of our thinking in all areas of policy and practice."
As the first Equality Conference to be held by the Commission since its establishment, the Executive plans to make this an annual event which will consider a range of equality issues in the context of recent social, economic and political developments. (MB)
