RUC sick bill pushes up cost of policing province
It has been revealed that the £17 million figure for sickness leave in the RUC is the bill for just one third of the total sickness costs for the year.
However, it is thought that this figure is only a fraction of the true cost of sickness, injury and lost time in the RUC.
Speaking at a police conference oh health and safety on Thursday evening, acting chairman of the Police Federation Jimmy Spratt said that the figure of £17 million only related to man hours and wages, and did not include compensation claims, legal fees and other payments made to officers injured during the course of their duties.
Police Board member Ian Paisley Jnr said that he found the figure “staggering”. He urged the Northern Ireland Secretary of State, Dr John Reid, to make sure that the new Police Board were given a clean slate in terms of funding for existing costs for the new Police Service of Northern Ireland.
The new Police Board composed of 10 political appointees and nine non-political appointees is to meet for the first time in the second week of November. (SP)

The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.
