Couple remanded in custody after major bomb find

A County Tyrone husband and wife have appeared in court charged in connection with the discovery of a 130lb-primed bomb.

Unemployed joiner Steven John Daly, 28, and his 25-year-old wife Helen Marie Daly from Glenaness Road, Sixmilecross, were charged with possession of an explosive substance with intent to endanger life and damage property.

At a special sitting of Omagh Magistrate court on Thursday October 18 both denied the charges. They were brought against the couple in relation to the discovery of a bomb close to Sixmilecross on Tuesday October 16. The 130-llb bomb was found in a disused shed and hidden in a creamery churn.

During follow up searches linked to the bomb find, another man and woman were detained in the Newtownbutler area of County Fermanagh.

Mrs Daly went into court with a blanket over her head. Relatives attending the court appeared angry at the media attention. The couple remained standing throughout the five-minute court hearing.

The court heard that both had protested their innocence under police questioning. A detective sergeant told the court that he believed he could connect them to the charge. They were both remanded in custody and were driven away from the court in separate cars. (AMcE)
