Education Board hosts Special Careers Convention

The Belfast Education and Library Board, in partnership with Northern Ireland Business Education Partnership (NIBEP), has hosted the second Special Schools Careers Convention.

As the only event of its kind in Northern Ireland, the convention, which was held at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast, was open to years 11 and 12 pupils from special schools in Belfast, their parents and teachers.

Margaret Watson, the board’s advisor on careers, said: “We firmly believe that the needs of all young people of Belfast should be met, and with this convention, over 200 children from special schools got the opportunity to see how they can enter the world of work.”

Louise McLean project manager at BIBEP added: “This event is unique to the city of Belfast because it offers employers an opportunity to interact with students with a range of ability levels, and students the opportunity to view the variety of career options open to them.”

The event also received a surprise guest in the form of UTV’s Julian Simmons. (MB)
