Debenhams poised to open Londonderry store

Department store chain Debenhams is set to create 500 jobs by opening two new stores in Bradford and Londonderry.

The new stores are part of the company’s ongoing expansion programme which will finish in 2006 and will result in 106 Debenham stores throughout the UK.

While announcing news of the new stores the company also revealed that its annual profits had risen by nearly 13 per cent to £146 million.

However it said that business had suffered a downturn in the aftermath of the terror attacks on the United States. It said that during its last financial year sales in comparable stores had grown by eight per cent, however in the seven weeks to October 20 sales had only risen by 3.4 per cent.

The company also announced that it would be opening a new store in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, as part of its international franchise operations. The company currently has seven international franchise stores, which should rise to 12 by the end of 2004. (MB)

Sainsbury’s reveals continued upsurge in sales
