Safeway show strong sales growth

Safeway, the UK's fourth biggest supermarket chain, has reported strong sales growth after revealing sales rose by 5.4 per cent over the July to October period.

The results, which are the eighth successive quarter in which the retailer has delivered growth of more than five per cent, follows Wednesday’s report by Sainsbury who are beginning to show signs of recovery with like-for-like sales growth of 5.3 per cent over the quarter.

Safeway is also accelerating a store refurbishment and investment programme to support further sales growth.

Its trade over the July to October quarter was however, lower than in the previous three months, when the retailer achieved sales growth of 6.1 per cent.

Safeway shares meanwhile stood 3.25p lower at 339p in morning trade on Thursday October 25. (MB)
