Mallon not to stand for re-election as Deputy First Minister

SDLP Assembly Group Chairman Alban Maginness has announced that Séamus Mallon will not seek re-election to the position of Deputy First Minister.

Paying tribute to Mr Mallon, Mr Maginness said: “The Assembly Group acknowledges the tremendous contribution made by Séamus Mallon as Deputy First Minister over the past three years, and wishes to pay tribute to his unstinting work for the party and the people of Northern Ireland throughout his career.

“During his time in office, Séamus Mallon transcended party politics and won the support of the entire community through his even handed and non-sectarian approach to his role.”

Mr Maginness also said that the SDLP Assembly party is to meet on Friday October 26, ahead of the party conference on November 10, to discuss outstanding issues, including the party’s nomination for the position of SDLP leader, which is widely tipped to be filled by Finance Minister Mark Durkan.

Meanwhile Ulster Unionist Party leader David Trimble is to put his name forward in the assembly seeking his old job as first minister if he gets the backing of his party's 110-member executive on Saturday October 27.

Nominations for the posts of First Minister and Deputy First Minister must be received within six weeks of the restoration of devolved government.
