UK Pfizer Site To Close

Pharmaceuticals giant Pfizer have announced plans to close its UK facility.

The Kent based site, which employs 2,400 people, will close due to the company's reorganisation of its research and development (R&D) capacity across the world.

It is expected that the majority of workers will be made redundant over the next two years.

However Pfizer have expressed interest in transfering several hundred positions to other sites or other companies carrying out work for Pfizer.

Business Secretary Vince Cable described the move as "extremely disappointing".

In 2007, the company closed its research and development manufacturing operations in Sandwich.

The site focused on allergy and respiratory drugs.

Ruth McKernan, who heads the Pfizer site, said it had played "an important role in the discovery and development of medicines and has brought many life-saving treatments to patients".
