Lords refuse to hear objections to £80M retail park
Work could soon commence on the controversial D5 retail park development at Tillysburn.
On Tuesday the House of Lords turned down a petition to hear an appeal raised by objectors to the D5 scheme.
Since it was proposed in 1995, the scheme has been bogged down by legal and procedural hearings as opponents of the scheme attempted to halt the major retail and leisure development situated just outside the Belfast City boundary.
The appeal to the House of Lords mounted by Belfast City Council, Belfast Chamber of Trade, and North Down Borough Council was a last ditch effort to prevent the scheme getting the go-ahead.
Traders and interested parties in Belfast claimed that the £80 million development would damage business in Belfast. In January this year the Court of Appeal overturned a ruling by the High Court that had blocked the scheme.
It proposes a mixed-use retail development with a Sainsbury’s supermarket, a cinema complex, and extensive retail warehouse facilities.
Developers, Aquis Estates claim that the development has the potential to create over 1,200 jobs.
However, the opponents of the scheme, playing down the ruling by the House of Lords, claimed that the retail development would not significantly affect retail trade in Belfast and that the City would continue to thrive. (SP)
