RUC treat shooting as attempted murder
The Royal Ulster Constabulary are treating a shooting incident involving a taxi driver in Lurgan, County Armagh as attempted murder.
The investigation concerns a taxi driver who claimed he was shot at when he called out to a house on the edge of the loyalist Mourneview estate in Lurgan at about 11pm on Wednesday October 31.
The Catholic father of two said he heard a number of bangs and later discovered a bullet, which had been fired at the back of his car.
Police have since recovered a bullet head in the rear of his taxi and are looking for any witnesses who were in the vicinity of McCormac Gardens in Lurgan town around 11pm to come forward.
Sinn Féin’s Dara O’Hagan said the attack was part of an ongoing effort, organised by anti-Agreement Unionists, to suck Republicans into conflict. He said: “This is a very serious situation and the likelihood is that somebody will be killed in this area and the entire process hijacked if a political initiative to stop this does not take place. This is the time to assert the primacy of peace making, the primacy of the political process and the need for sustainable and stable institutions.” (AMcE)
