RG Coulter recognised for commitment to training

Kilkeel company RG Coulter & Co has carried off a prestigious accolade in the National Training Awards Competition 2001, organised in Northern Ireland by the Training and Employment Agency.

The local firm was a regional winner in the awards, thanks to a programme of co-operation with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) which saw RG Coulter address a range of training needs to improve the company’s performance.

Central to the training initiative was the setting-up of an assessment centre to deliver sector-specific NVQs to the company’s apprentices, facilitated by CITB and overseen by Coulter’s workshop manager Brian McConnell.

Shortly after embarking on the initiative, the company reaped the benefits of achieving the Investors in People award and was commended by the official assessor as standing out “like a beacon on how it could and should be done”.

Speaking about being the recipient of the Northern Ireland regional award, Group Chairman Gordon Coulter commented: “Training makes sound business sense. Today’s construction industry demands a labour market with skills that keep pace with changes in markets, technology and legislation.”

Brian McMullen, Regional Manager for CITB, added: “RG Coulter have clearly demonstrated that in today’s increasingly competitive construction industry, investing in your workforce through training is essential to business success.” (CL)
