Boat Crew Rescued In Mayday Drama
A cross-border operation has seen four people rescued from drowning as their sinking fishing boat hit rocks close to Ardglass Harbour.
The stricken vessel's mayday call was received around 6pm on Monday by Belfast Coastguard with the RNLI Portaferry Inshore lifeboat, South Down Coastguard and the Dublin-based Irish Coastguard Rescue Helicopter tasked to the scene.
The fishermen were pulled free from the 58ft wooden fishing vessel named 'Karen' just off the Co Down coast nd taken ashore by lifeboat where they all received medical attention with one man later transferred to hospital.
The SDLP's South Down MP Margaret Ritchie said her thoughts are with the family, adding that the rescue highlights the importance of a locally based coastguard.
"Thankfully, due to the professionalism and speedy efforts of the Belfast Coastguard this did not end in tragedy and the crew are now looking forward to the New Year with their families," Ms Ritchie said.
