DARD Looks To Young
Department of Agriculture Minister Michelle Gildernew has set out the programme of work that her Department (DARD) plans to take forward over the next three years. This will ensure that the needs of rural children and young people are incorporated into the business of the Department. "This is an important area of work and one that is very close to my heart. My Department's vision is for a thriving and sustainable rural community and environment. We have one of the youngest populations in Europe, with children and young people forming a substantial part of the rural community. The rural community and environment's prospects are very much dependent on the next generation and we need to ensure that the children and young people who live there are developed to their full potential," she said, noting that she "was very impressed by the many groups of young people and the organisations who provided their guidance and responses in the development of this Action Plan".

On 31 March last year, a Water Quality Inspector, acting on behalf of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency observed a grey/white polluting discharge entering the Killymoon River from a pipe. The discharge had a significant odour of untreated sewage. The source of the polluting discharge was traced to Sandholes Sewage Pumping Station operated by NIW. A sample taken at the time of the incident confirmed that the discharge contained poisonous, noxious or polluting matter which was potentially harmful to fish life in the receiving waterway.
