Budget Spells Cuts For TD's Pensions
Legislation to introduce some of the measures announced in this week's Irish Budget is likely to be introduced in the Dáil within days of Tuesday's announcement.
The Financial Emergency Measures Bill is expected to be taken at the House very quickly to allow the Government to introduce changes from the start of next year, rather than waiting for the passing of the Finance Bill, which is expected in February.
Meanwhile, the Tánaiste has confirmed that politicians and even ministers will face cuts in their pay and pensions in the Budget.
Stressing that she was confident the Budget would be passed, Mary Coughlan said the reductions in State pensions would also be applied to ministers and TDs.
She said on RTÉ that while politicians had already taken reductions in salaries and expenses, the next round will also apply to pensions of existing TDs and ministers.
It is understood the cuts will be significant and the cuts in pensions will be graduated with those on bigger pensions facing proportionately bigger cuts.

Belfast City Council is to write to the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) after complaints from residents in relation to pothole repairs. Alliance Lisnasharragh Councillor Michael Long has questioned the standard of repairs to potholes following multiple attempts being made to the same pothole.

Sinn Féin has hot out over the proposed budget cuts for Special Educational Needs support. MLA Pat Sheehan said it is "deeply concerning" that funding for schools in NI is to be slashed in half. He said: "Children with special educational needs require the highest level of support in our schools to ensure they have the best start in life.

Housing Executive To Cut 500 Jobs
The Northern Ireland Housing Executive is axing 500 jobs over the next four years. These redundancies, which will see one in every six employees being let go, have been implement as a direct result of budget cuts. Housing chiefs are required to streamline administration and staffing costs.

Northern Ireland's First and Deputy First Ministers today reopened talks at Downing Street centred on agreeing a financial package for a devolved ministry of justice. The new department would also oversee the province's policing, and pave the way for a local Attorney General.
