SDLP race for top positions opens

The ballot box was officially opened this weekend for the election of the SDLP’s new leader and deputy leader.

About 500 delegates are expected to cast their votes at the SDLP’s annual conference taking place in the Slieve Donard Hotel in Newcastle from Friday November 9 to Sunday November 11.

Although both top positions are vacant, it is widely predicted that Mark Durkan, who was recently installed as Deputy First Minster of the Northern Ireland Executive, was go ahead to fill John Hume’s shoes unchallenged.

However, there are five SDLP members vying for Seamus Mallon’s position as deputy leader of the SDLP: Agriculture Minister Ms Bríd Rogers, Employment and Learning Minister Sean Farren, junior Executive minister Denis Haughey, former mayor of Belfast Alban Maginness and Down District councillor Margaret Ritchie.

The winner of the races will be announced on Sunday morning.

This year’s conference will be especially marked for SDLP delegates, as it will feature John Hume’s final address as leader of the party – a position he has filled since 1979. (AMcE)
