Scottish job shock as BP sheds jobs

In a devastating jobs blow for Scotland, BP Amoco has announced that it is to restructure operations at its Grangemouth refining complex, leading to the loss of almost 1,000 jobs.

The petrochemical company confirmed the news on Tuesday, November 13, following a ten-week review of the site's organisation, asset structure and financial performance, which BP Amoco described as having been “severely impacted by the economic downturn, unprecedentedly depressed chemicals markets, and a series of operational problems”.

The cutbacks will be phased in over a period of two years, and discussions are already underway with union representatives. BP Amoco has also pledged to make “every effort” to ensure employees are relocated to alternative positions within BP, in addition to providing re-training opportunities, job search assistance and severance packages.

The company is also in discussion with Falkirk Council and Scottish Enterprise (Forth Valley) to address actions in support of people and in support of broadening and enhancing the local economy.

"This is a very difficult time for everyone working at Grangemouth, and we are committed to handling it as openly and sensitively as possible," said Colin Maclean, director of the complex.

"However, we have no choice but to move ahead with this transformation if we are to ensure that Grangemouth remains safe, modern and equipped to prosper in an increasingly competitive global marketplace so that we can safeguard its long-term future." (CL)
