NI On Show At German Medical Expo

High-tech products for the global healthcare industry developed by over a dozen Northern Ireland companies will feature today at a major expo in Gemany.

Medica 2010 in Dusseldorf sees the 13 local companies on show as part of the world's biggest healthcare and biotech event.

They are all being assisted by Invest Northern Ireland to take part and they will be among 4,500 exhibitors at the event which is expected to attract almost 140,000 industry visitors from 40 countries over the three days, 17-20 November.

Two universities and five companies are on the Invest NI exhibition stand showcasing the expertise of local companies.

These are Queen's University, Belfast and the University of Ulster as well as specialist firms Armstrong Medical, Coleraine; Biancamed, Belfast; i-Path Diagnostics, Belfast; Intelesens, Belfast and Linnodee, Ballyclare.

Also taking part in the overall Invest NI visit to Medica are: Amtec Medical, Antrim; CIGA Healthcare, Ballymena; G-Care, Lisburn; and TruCorp, Belfast.

In addition, the following four companies are exhibiting independently: Colorite Europe, Lisburn; Fortress Diagnostics, Antrim; Heartsine Technology, Belfast; and Randox Laboratories, Crumlin.

Dr Vicky Kell, Invest NI Trade Director, commenting on Medica 2010, said: "Medica is the perfect platform for local companies in biotechnology and life sciences to display their expertise and innovative products to a global audience of industry professionals.

"Our areas of expertise include diagnostics, devices, emergency cardiac treatment and medical sensors used particularly in the latest connected health technology.

"Over the years, a number of our companies have made important contacts that have either led to direct business or to knowledge transfer agreements.

"In addition, the exhibition features a programme of conferences and expert workshops on current issues including gene therapy, sudden cardiac death, stroke therapies, the latest trends in both inpatient and outpatient care, and new developments in nutrition," she said.

"The event, furthermore, attracts visitors from emerging nations which are investing in medical related projects, as well as researchers from international universities, colleges and research institutes."

Staff from Invest NI Trade Development Centre in Dusseldorf will be assisting the companies during the event.

Building work has been completed on a new 25,000 sq ft facility in Carrickfergus for a test equipment manufacturing firm. Yelo's new facility is located at Trooperlane Industrial Estate and Invest NI offered the firm £243,000 towards the construction project.
