Partnerships to benefit from £15m EU funding

The names of the four local partnership groups selected to receive a share of £15 million from the EU sponsored Natural Resource Rural Tourism Initiative have been announced.

Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development Bríd Rodgers, Minister for Enterprise Trade and Investment Sir Reg Empey, and Minister for the Environment Sam Foster, announced the partnerships on Wednesday November 14. The selected partnerships are: the Causeway Coast and Glens Heritage Trust; the South Armagh Tourism Initiative; the Mourne Heritage Trust; and Sperrins Tourism.

In announcing the partnership groups Mrs Rodgers said: “I congratulate those partnerships that have been selected to deliver this important Peace Programme Initiative. The Initiative will make available £15 million for the development of a sustainable tourism infrastructure within the five target areas. This is a wonderful opportunity and it is now up to the partnerships to make it all happen on the ground.”

Sir Reg Empey added: “This is an excellent example of joined up government. It will inject much-needed funds into the five target areas. Tourism based on the Province’s natural resources is under-developed and with the help of the European Commission through this Initiative we hope to address this deficiency.”

The Initiative, which is being jointly administered by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Northern Ireland Tourist Board and the Environment and Heritage Service, is expected to announce the fifth recipient for the Fermanagh area shortly.

The groups announced will have up to six months to prepare sustainable tourism strategies for their respective target areas.

Minister for the Department of the Environment Sam Foster said: "The natural beauty of our rural countryside is renowned. It has excellent potential to attract much needed tourism to the Province but we must also take care to ensure that we do not damage that asset. That is why we will place considerable emphasis on sustainable tourism within the strategies which the partnerships will prepare.” (AMcE)
