Ó Donnghaile To Run In East Belfast
Sinn Fein activists gathered in east Belfast last night to select their candidate for next year's Belfast City Council and the Assembly elections.
Niall Ó Donnghaile was elected unopposed by local party activists and his name will now go to the party's Ard Chomhairle for ratification.
Speaking to a packed selection convention Mr Ó Donnghaile (pictured) said: "It is an honour to be selected by party activists in this area to represent the party in the forthcoming Assembly and Council elections. Having grown up in the Short Strand I am aware of the many problems facing the people of east Belfast.
"I look forward to all the challenges and opportunities that this election will present.
"Sinn Fein will continue to work for all of the people of east Belfast and to build upon our support in the area to ensure that the people of the area get the best representation possible," he concluded.
Meanwhile, there has been increased political activity at the other end of NI's political spectrum ahead of next year's Assembly elections.
The Ulster Unionist MLA for Upper Bann, George Savage has been sidelined by his constituency association.
The party selected sitting MLA Samuel Gardiner, Craigavon Councillor Joanne Dobson and Colin McCusker - who is the son of former MP Harold McCusker instead.

SF Calls For Action On NI Mental Health Services
Sinn Féin has called for more to be done to improve mental health services across the north of Ireland. The party's mental health spokesperson, MLA Órlaithí Flynn, made the call after the release of the Registrar General's 2023 Annual Report which has highlighted an increase in deaths by suicide in 2023.

Conservative MP steps down from party to join DUP
Westminster MP, and staunch supporter of unionism, Andrew Hunter has announced his decision to stand down from the Conservative party and join the Democratic Unionist Party. Mr Hunter, who is MP for Basingstoke, made the announcement on Wednesday after informing Conservative Party leader Iain Duncan Smith of his intentions in a written letter.

DUP and Sinn Fein leading in Assembly Elections
UPDATE: The Democratic Unionist Party and Sinn Fein hold the majority of seats in the Northern Ireland Assembly Election. The DUP and Sinn Fein emerged considerably ahead of the other parties with main losers the UUP dropping 9 seats to retain just 18 seats.

Greens Support SDLP's Claire Hanna In South Belfast
Green Party leader Clare Bailey has confirmed she will stand aside in South Belfast in the hope of electing the SDLP's Claire Hanna as a pro-Remain Westminster MP. Ms Bailey, a current MLA for the constituency, said Ms Hanna is "best placed" to take the seat from the incumbent DUP MP Emma Little-Pengelly.
