County Tyrone sees successful historic restoration

A unique restoration scheme in County Tyrone has been officially opened by Social Development Minister Nigel Dodds.

The £500,000 project involved the sympathetic restoration of a historic terrace and the implementation of an environmental improvement scheme in the Mill Street area of Caledon.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr Dodds said: “Caledon has a host of unique and beautiful buildings which represent an important part of our architectural heritage. The restoration work and the environmental improvements have made a very significant impact on the appearance and life of the village.

“The regeneration of towns and villages across Northern Ireland is an important priority for the Department for Social Development. The Mill Street project is an example of what can be achieved through partnerships between local communities, statutory agencies and funding bodies.”

Caledon Regeneration Partnership was formed in 1994 to take forward a planned social, economic and environmental regeneration strategy for the village of Caledon. The Partnership is made up of representatives from the local community, local authority and Caledon Estates Company.

The project was funded through a partnership of private owners and Caledon Regeneration Partnership with the EU Special Support Programme for Peace and Reconciliation, Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council, Department for Social Development, Northern Ireland Housing Executive, Heritage Lottery and the Environment and Heritage Service.

John McKinney, Chief Executive of the EU Special Programmes, commented: “I am delighted to see that EU monies have helped the complementary environmental improvement scheme. The project demonstrates that reconciliation will be facilitated by improving the appearance of towns and villages through the redevelopment of areas which have experienced physical decline as a result of ‘the troubles’.” (CL)
