Farren welcomes cross-border training
The Chief Executives from Training & Employment Agencies north and south of the border have met in Belfast in joint session to discuss issues of common interest.
The session, held on Monday November 19, was headed by Ian Walters, Chief Executive T&EA, and Rody Molloy Chief Executive of Foras Aiseanna Saothair (FAS) and is the fifth such meeting since north/south co-operation was firmly established under the Good Friday Agreement.
The agenda included discussions on recent developments in the labour market, north and south, presentations on the new FAS strategy and Welfare Reform and discussion on further opportunities for joint working.
Speaking after the meeting, the Minister for Employment and Learning, Dr Sean Farren praised the efforts of both Boards and the benefits of working on an all Ireland basis.
Minister Farren said: “These joint meetings are a practical example of the benefits of working together. They help us to identify common challenges and look together towards common solutions. They further provide an opportunity for bench marking against best practice in each organization.”
The Minister also referred to the challenges on the economic front and said strong economic growth and tightening labour markets have been replaced by fears of a downturn in the global market place.
However, he was optimistic about the return to growth and concluded by saying: “Throughout Ireland the critical issue is timing – we need to be able to respond quickly and in a flexible way to the demands from industry for the people and skills required to sustain growth.” (AMcE)
