Newtownabbey benefits from Tesco job creation

Newtownabbey is to benefit from the opening of a new Tesco store that is set to create 200 jobs in the town.

The province’s newest Tesco outlet will be based in a purpose-built facility at the Abbey Retail Park, constructed at a cost of around £20 million. Some 300 staff will transfer from the existing store in the Abbey Centre to join the 200 new employees in what is one of the largest supermarkets ever built in Northern Ireland. With a sales area of over 50,000 square feet, the store will trade on a twenty-four hour basis, trading round the clock on every day except Sunday.

Visitors to the Newtownabbey outlet - described by Store Director Richard Baker as “already one of our flagships” - will see a variety of changes in store, with counters placed in the middle of the shop floor, and brightly coloured wall decoration behind the fresh food counters.

Store Manager Stephen Gibson said that he was looking forward to the first day of trading, and paid tribute to the hard work shown by Tesco employees in existing branches. He said: “Ken Megaw, who is now managing the Knocknagoney store, has built strong relationships with local schools and residents and we shall maintain these links to help establish Tesco in the hearts and minds of the local community.”

Tesco employs more than 7,000 people at 33 outlets throughout the province. (CL)
