Belfast promises warm welcome for US team
The Lord Mayor of Belfast has welcomed the announcement that Belfast will act as host to Team USA during the 2003 Special Olympics.
More than 7,000 athletes from 170 countries are expected to take part in the Special Olympics, which are being held in Ireland in June 2003 - the first time the games have been held outside the United States.
Details of the various towns and cities across the island of Ireland which will host the teams in the run-up to the competition were announced in Dublin on Sunday November 18 when it was confirmed that Belfast will host the largest delegation, that from the United States.
Councillor Jim Rodgers said: “I am absolutely delighted that the Special Olympics Committee has confirmed that Belfast will host Team USA.”
“It is only fit and proper that Northern Ireland’s capital city should act as host for the largest team, and I can assure all the athletes, their coaches and their families that the city and people of Belfast will give them an extremely warm and friendly welcome in June 2003.
The Lord Mayor concluded: “Belfast has a reputation for its hospitality. I have absolutely no doubt that the young Americans competing in the Special Olympics will be equally impressed with the red carpet treatment which they will receive in 2003.”
