Consider Career As 'Manny', Says NICMA

A local childcare charity is urging men to consider a career working as a 'manny' (childminder).

NICMA - the Childminding Association said it's disappointed that just two of its 2,500 members are men who run their own childminding business.

A further 35 male members work alongside their wives, but that still means that men make up just a tiny proportion - 1.5% - of NICMA's childminder membership.

As two-thirds of all registered childminders in Northern Ireland belong to NICMA, the charity is confident that the figures reflect the startling under-representation of men throughout the childminding profession in Northern Ireland.

"It would seem that men worry about being viewed with suspicion if they set up as a childminder," says NICMA's Director, Bridget Nodder.

"And there's no doubt, from what we've heard, that some parents have strong reservations about using a male childminder.

"But men who have the right personal qualities can make brilliant childminders and also provide a valuable male role model in children's lives," she said, noting that all registered childminders are fully checked "so parents should have no qualms about using them".
