Harland and Wolff deliver goods to Liverpool
Belfast shipyard Harland and Wolff has delivered the pontoon and linkspan bridge to Liverpool’s new £25 million Twelve Quays roll-on-roll-off ferry terminal.
Harland and Wolff won a contract to build parts for ferry operator NorseMerchant in March 2001.
Meanwhile the shipyard announced at the start of November that it had contacted its unions seeking talks about future employment levels. In a statement on November 6 the company said work would begin to run out from the middle of 2002 and while it is trying to win new orders there was no guarantee it will be successful.
The yard currently has a workforce of about 600, but the only orders on its books are two roll on-roll off ferries for the Ministry of Defence Strategic sealift Programme. The vessels are scheduled for delivery in October 2002 and January 2003.
The company has been in difficulties for some time and laid off half of its 1,200 strong workforce last year due to an empty order book.
Financial figures in August showed that with only small contracts to tide it over from March to August, the firm racked up losses of almost £4m.

Order book empty as ferry leaves H&W
When the roll-on roll-off ferry Anvil Point leaves its slips at Belfast today, it could well bring to an end the yard's 150-year history as a major ship builder. The Harland and Wolff order book is now empty following the completion of the 22,000 tonne ferry for the Andrew Weir shipping company.
