Church of Ireland appoint new bishop of Clogher

The Church of Ireland has elected a new bishop of Clogher during a special meeting held in Dublin.

The Very Reverend Michael Jackson, who is currently the Dean of Cork, was appointed on Wednesday November 21 as Bishop of Clogher to succeed Bishop Brian Hannon. Bishop Hannon, whose son Neil is a former member of the pop band Divine Comedy, retired in October.

Wednesday’s election passed to the House of Bishops when the Episcopal Electoral College for Clogher Diocese failed to make an appointment at its meeting on 8 November 2001.

Dean Jackson, 45, was born in Lurgan and educated at Portora Royal School, Enniskillen. A graduate of Trinity College, Dublin and St John’s College, Cambridge, he was awarded a Doctorate of Philosophy in 1986 for his thesis on ‘Prayer and Miracle in the Spirituality of St. Augustine of Hippo’.

Dean Jackson was ordained Deacon in 1986 and Priest in 1987. In 1997 he was appointed to his present position as Incumbent of St Fin Barre’s Union, Cork and Dean of Cork.

Dean Jackson is married to Inez, who is a doctor, and they have one daughter, Camilla. (AMcE)
