'Parties' Celebrate Ryder Cup Win

The political parties both North and South have congratulated the Europe team's win by a whisker of yesterday's Ryder Cup.

There were also many parties being held last night to mark how Northern Ireland's own Graeme McDowell swept to victory as Europe clung on to its overnight lead to beat United States 14½-13½ and regain the Ryder Cup.

This morning, Mary Hanafin, Ireland's Minister for Sport congratulated the European Ryder Cup team on their victory over the United States in Celtic Manor Resort, Wales.

"There were many nail-biting moments for spectators during the four days of the competition, and today’s singles matches provided a wonderful spectacle of closely contested match-play golf for people on both sides of the Atlantic.

"The steely determination of Graeme McDowell's play in the final holes of the 2010 Ryder Cup will live long in the memories of everyone throughout Ireland and Europe, with once again a golfer from Ireland playing a pivotal role in the final stages of the competition."

Northern Ireland's Sports Minister Nelson McCausland also congratulated the players, Singling out the two Northern Ireland players for particular praise, the Minister said: "I was delighted to see Northern Ireland's two golfers Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell play such an instrumental part in helping Europe regain the Ryder Cup. Indeed with Darren Clarke as vice captain, Northern Ireland's players have a deserving place at the top table in the golfing world."

Trailing 9½-6½ going into the delayed finale, the USA fought back superbly to take yesterday's match to the wire as Rickie Fowler won the last three holes to snatch an unlikely half with Edoardo Molinari.

This left Europe relying on McDowell to beat Hunter Mahan and the NI ace then birdied the 16th before sealing victory at the 17th.

Labour Party Spokesperson on Sport, Mary Upton and Fine Gael's John O'Mahony also joined in the praise, with the former saying: "The contribution of the Irish players, Graeme McDowell, Padraig Harrington and Rory McElroy were central to the European success, being involved in pairs and singles results that accumulated 6.5 points over the course of the weekend.

"Credit must be given to both teams for providing a great spectacle of golf that was played in a very sporting manner. I congratulate all the European players and management involved, for their fantastic achievement in regaining the Ryder Cup for Europe."
