Robinson outlines future of transport
Northern Ireland’s Regional Development Minister has outlined his vision for the future of transportation in Northern Ireland.
Addressing the Transportation Sub Committee of the EU Committee of the Regions, which met in Belfast for the first time to discuss the European Commission's recent White Paper - 'Transport Policy for 2010,’ Peter Robinson said: "I want to ensure that Northern Ireland develops a transportation network comparable to the best in other similar sized regions throughout Europe.
"Investment in transportation is key to economic and social advancement in terms of regional development. As Minister for Regional Development one of my key objectives is to develop a balanced and inclusive transportation strategy for Northern Ireland, which will benefit society, the economy, the environment and promote equality of opportunity for all, particularly the most vulnerable such as the elderly.
"Following the years of serious under-investment in our transportation infrastructure the challenges are huge. However, with the support of the Assembly I am determined to put in place a 10 year strategy capable of transforming transport in Northern Ireland."
Mr Robinson outlined the steps being taken by the Department for Regional Development to formulate a 10-year Regional Transportation Strategy for Northern Ireland.
The Minister addressed the EU Committee of the Regions Sub Committee when they met in the Hilton Hotel on Friday, November 23.
