Ryder Golf Accolade Celebrated
NI's own Graeme McDowell has swept to victory as Europe clung on to its overnight lead to beat United States 14½-13½ to regain the Ryder Cup.
Trailing 9½-6½ going into the delayed finale, the USA fought back superbly to take the match to the wire as Rickie Fowler won the last three holes to snatch an unlikely half with Edoardo Molinari.
This left Europe relying on McDowell to beat Hunter Mahan and the NI ace then birdied the 16th before sealing victory at the 17th.
This afternoon, East Londonderry MP Gregory Campbell congratulated Graeme McDowell for securing European victory in the Ryder Cup.
Mr Campbell said that this will have topped off an outstanding year for the Portrush man after his earlier American Open win back in June.
"Thanks to Graeme's play today in his match against Hunter Mahan he has helped secure 'Victory for Europe' day in the Ryder Cup.
"Graeme, along with Rory McIlroy have been fantastic ambassadors for Northern Ireland at the Ryder Cup, but Portrush and Northern Ireland as a whole are particularly proud of Graeme and everything he has achieved," he said.
"This result will top an absolutely outstanding year for Graeme after his victory at Pebble Beach back in June.
"Northern Ireland has a proud history of producing outstanding sports personalities and there is no doubt that Graeme's name is firmly settled amongst many of those great names," said the MP.
