Empey to promote NI business in China
Stormont trade minister Sir Reg Empey will be in China next week in support of the biggest ever trade mission to Hong Kong and China organised by Trade International Northern Ireland, the export and trade arm of the Industrial Development Board.
Sir Reg will link up with mission members when they arrive in Beijing from Shanghai and Hong Kong on December 2. Taking part in the 10-day mission to China, part of an ongoing programme of Trade International initiatives in this important global market, are 38 directors and senior managers from 27 Northern Ireland companies.
The Minister will be meeting Chinese Government representatives to discuss trade and investment issues during his visit to Beijing. Sir Reg will also host a reception for the Northern Ireland group, their guests and key contacts. Overall, his objective is to provide practical support and add value to the export efforts of local companies at a time when their traditional markets are slowing down.
Sir Reg said: "I am immensely encouraged by the number of companies and the breadth of industries involved in this mission to China at a time when this rapidly developing nation is poised for even faster growth through its membership of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
"In addition, very substantial business opportunities, particularly in the Beijing region, will result from this city's selection as the host for the 2008 Olympic Games. This will require significant expenditure on infrastructure, facilities and services for participants and the millions of visitors expected to attend events.
"The strength of the mission to such an intensely competitive marketplace is an indication of the 'can do' approach which has become a feature of many Northern Ireland export-focused companies.” (AMcE)
